20 Beach Activities For Every Age

There is something wonderfully simple about a day at the beach. With a little imagination, the shoreline becomes a playground full of adventure, creativity and discovery. Some of the happiest family memories are made not through expensive attractions or packed itineraries, but by spending time together exploring rock pools, building sandcastles and watching the tide roll in.

Whether you're staying for a weekend or enjoying a longer family holiday on the North Norfolk coast, here are 20 beach activities every child should experience at least once.

1. Build the biggest sandcastle (or boat) you can imagine

Not just any sandcastle. Create a castle complete with towers, bridges, moats and even a flag made from a stick and leaf. Working together makes it even more fun. Alternatively, dig out a boat with seats, which creates a great stage to start your pirate adventures!

2. Go rock pooling

Peer into shallow pools left behind at low tide and see what you can discover. Find velvet swimming crabs, shrimps, edible winkle (sea snails), long-spined sea-scorpions and colourful seaweed are all waiting to be found. Cromer and Weston Runton are great locations for this, where the chalk reef is often exposed.

3. Hunt for beautiful shells

See who can find the most unusual shell, the smallest shell or even one shaped like a heart. Take it home or use it as decoration for the next activity…

4. Turn someone into a mermaid

Bury the legs of a willing family member (or friend) and design your very own mermaid tail and decorate with stones, shells and seaweed.

5. Create a beach masterpiece

Use shells, pebbles, seaweed and driftwood to create a piece of natural art before leaving it for someone else to discover.

6. Try stone skimming

Finding the perfect flat pebble is half the fun. Throw it across the surface of the sea and see who can make theirs bounce the most or the furthest across the water.

7. Draw giant pictures in the sand

Grab a stick and let your imagination run wild. Draw animals, write messages or create a giant maze.

8. Build rivers and moats

Dig winding rivers and connect them to the incoming tide, watching the water flow through your miniature landscape is really fun.

9. Fly a kite

A breezy day on the Norfolk coast is the perfect opportunity to watch a colourful kite dance across the sky. It’s also a great workout for the arms on those windier days.

10. Enjoy a family beach picnic

Sometimes the simplest moments become the most memorable. Pack sandwiches, fruit and a few treats, then enjoy lunch with a sea view. Or bring a portable/disposable BBQ to cook sausage/bacon and enjoy an early morning breakfast together.

11. Hunt for fossils

North Norfolk is famous for its Deep History Coast. Keep your eyes peeled and you might discover a fossil or semi-precious stones hidden amongst the shore or within the cliffs. West Runton is one of the best places to find them. In this location fragments of bone, antler and tusks have also been found.

12. Watch the sunset (or sunrise)

As the sky changes from blue to orange and pink, take a moment to simply sit together and enjoy the view as the sun disappears behind the horizon.

13. Spot wildlife or go crabbing

Look out for seabirds, crabs, jellyfish, tiny fish and, if you're lucky, even seals along the Norfolk coast.

For crabbing, Cromer is best - buy a crab line/net, fill the pouch with bait (frozen squid is best), pop some stones in the net to weigh it down, lower it over the side of Cromer Pier and wait for your first catch. Make sure you have a bucket of seawater waiting and set them free on the beach once you’re done.

14. Attempt stone stacking

Firstly, you need a lot of patience! Spend time as a family finding the right stones to pile on top of each other to create a stone tower. Or make it a competition of who can create the tallest one. A tip - you can use much smaller stones to help it balance.

15. Play beach games

Playing football, frisbee, rounders, kubb, relay races or even your own Beach Olympics are brilliant ways to burn off energy together.

16. Swim or paddle in the sea

In the UK this can be very seasonal, but even in the colder months entering lower water temperatures can have health benefits to our bodies.

Try standing in the shallows, watching your feet sink into the sand after every wave.

17. Listen to the sea

Sit quietly for one minute. Count how many different sounds you can hear - the waves, seabirds, the wind and distant boats.

18. Find a face in the stones

As you walk along the beach you’ll notice stones of different shapes and sizes. Each one could tell a story. We love looking for stones with faces. Here’s one we found… can you find one too?

19. Leave only footprints

Take home your memories and don’t leave anything behind. Collect any litter you find and help keep our coastline beautiful for everyone. Some beaches have litter pickers you can borrow to play your part in keeping our beaches clean.

20. Finish with fish and chips, and an ice cream

After a day of exploring, there is no better way to round off a family beach adventure than sharing fish and chips and an ice cream together. If you’re staying in Cromer we’d recommend No.1 Fish & Chips, and in Bacton head to Walcott’s Kingfisher café.

Why family beach days are so special

A beach offers something for every generation. While children discover tiny crabs in rock pools or race along the sand, parents and grandparents can slow down, breathe in the fresh sea air and enjoy time together without the usual distractions of everyday life. It is one of the few places where everyone naturally switches off from screens and reconnects with each other.

Many of these activities cost little or nothing at all, yet they often become the moments children remember long after the holiday has ended. Whether it's finding their first fossil, building an enormous sandcastle or simply watching the sun disappear below the horizon, these shared experiences are what make family holidays truly unforgettable.

If you're planning a visit to the North Norfolk coast, why not see how many of these activities your family can tick off? You may be surprised to discover that the simplest adventures often become the most treasured memories.
