The Health Benefits of Being by the Sea
We've all experienced it. You arrive at the coast, take a deep breath of salty air, hear the waves breaking on the shore and somehow you feel lighter almost immediately. Increasingly, research suggests there are genuine health benefits of being by the sea.
Over the last twenty years, psychologists, neuroscientists and public health researchers have increasingly studied what happens to our minds and bodies when we spend time near the sea. While there is still much to learn, the evidence is becoming clear: spending time by the coast can genuinely improve our physical and mental wellbeing.
Here are some of the reasons why…
1. Looking at the sea reduces stress
When we spend long periods surrounded by traffic, screens, notifications and constant demands, our brains remain in a state of heightened alertness. Researchers have found that simply looking at natural environments, particularly water, helps reduce this activity associated with stress and mental fatigue.
Ever wondered why many of us instinctively stand looking out to sea without doing anything else? The sea provides what psychologists call "soft fascination." Unlike television or social media, waves and the horizon gently hold our attention without demanding it. This allows the brain's directed attention system to recover, leaving us feeling calmer and mentally refreshed. Think of it as allowing your brain to switch from "work mode" into "recovery mode."
2. The calming effect of ocean waves
There's a reason people use recordings of ocean waves to help them sleep. The rhythmic, predictable sound of breaking waves acts as a form of "pink noise." Unlike sudden or irregular sounds, pink noise contains frequencies that many people find calming and has been linked in some studies to improved sleep quality and memory consolidation.
The steady rhythm also encourages slower breathing and activates the parasympathetic nervous system - the part of our nervous system responsible for "rest and digest". As this system becomes more active your heart rate slows, blood pressure may reduce, muscles relax and stress hormones begin to fall. And this is why many people notice their shoulders physically dropping after only a few minutes sitting on the beach.
3. Fresh sea air helps us breathe easier
One of the biggest benefits is surprisingly simple - there are usually fewer vehicles, less industry and more constant air movement. Sea breezes continually replace inland air with cleaner ocean air, reducing concentrations of pollutants, and people with asthma or allergies report that they find breathing easier near the coast.
4. Negative ions boosts wellbeing
When waves crash onto the shore, they release tiny electrically charged molecules called negative ions into the air, with studies suggesting these ions may help improve mood, reduce feelings of stress and increase alertness. In contrast, our modern lives are often filled with positive ions, which are generated by electronic devices, air pollution, synthetic materials and air conditioning. Researchers believe an abundance of negative ions have shown to influence serotonin activity within our brains, contributing to the sea’s effect of leaving us feeling calmer, more energised and refreshed after time on the coast.
5. Beach walking providing low impact exercise
Walking along the beach is an excellent form of low-impact exercise suitable for a wide range of ages. A leisurely stroll along the loose, soft sand means the muscles around your ankles, calves, knees and hips work harder to maintain balance, while the sand surface absorbs the impact reducing stress on joints. Research suggests walking on sand can increase energy expenditure compared with walking on firm surfaces, making it a great way of keeping fit whilst experiencing all these other benefits of being by the sea.
6. Sunlight boosts Vitamin D
Being outdoors and exposed to sunlight enables our skin to produce Vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones, immune function, muscle health and supporting mood. Of course, sensible sun protection is still important, but spending time outdoors naturally increases opportunities for healthy sunlight exposure.
7. Encourages mindful attention
Many people struggle to sit quietly and meditate, but when you reach the beach there is an ease to simply watching of waves coming in or staring at the horizon. You happily spend hours searching for shells, building sandcastles and rock pooling. All these activities encourage our attention to remain in the present moment. This ‘mindful attention’ is associated with lower stress, reduced anxiety and improved emotional wellbeing. The beauty is that children do this instinctively. Adults often rediscover it.
8. Improved body clock regulation
Natural daylight is one of the strongest signals for regulating our circadian rhythm - our internal 24-hour body clock. Morning daylight helps suppress melatonin during the day and supports its release later in the evening. Combined with physical activity, this often leads to deeper, more restorative sleep after a day spent outdoors. Many guests tell us how well they’ve slept after spending a few days by the coast.
9. Quality time together
Beach holidays naturally create opportunities that modern life often squeezes out - giving time for long conversations, shared meals, family walks, games on the sand, watching sunsets together and putting phones away. It provides that digital detox we all crave! These moments create memories that last long after the holiday ends and build deeper relationships. And this is by far the greatest health benefit - uninterrupted time with the people you love.
